It's sometimes hard to describe the sweet and lively beauty of Val d'Orcia. It's a place of pure natural beauty while its marvellous nature was enriched by the hard human work. It hans't been always so, Val d'Orcia had been until the I world war an abandoned area and it required a decade of hard work to return inhabited and fertile. Roads were built and schools and hospices and even a railway. The soil was plowed by shovels and an enormous amount of people was employed. Crops and trees were planted. Such a hard exhausting work paid back to turn Val d'Orcia into the paradise you can now enjoy and admire.
